Hot Fun in the Summertime!

Vamp on a beach

“Hot Fun in the Summertime”, is not just a groovy song by Sly & The Family Stone, it’s the perfect mantra for ALL THINGS SUMMER! And where’s the best place to be on a beautiful summer day? The beach. The sound of the ocean waves, blue skies, warm sand and hot sun beaming down like a laser… it doesn’t get much better than that. You reach into your beach bag for the sunblock. After slathering on a sufficient amount of skin protection, you adjust your lounge chair so that it’s directly facing the sun again but wait! You forgot something…hmmm, what you ask?

Your SUNGLASSES silly! Now, because we’re two years post covid and our worlds have been altered in more ways than one without our consent, you get a pass for not knowing that June 27 is National Sunglasses Day.  We are all more conscious of our health, from washing our hands to taking vitamins, fist bumps replacing handshakes and not standing in people’s personal space. But, I want to take a minute to remind you how important it is to protect your eyes, after all they are the windows to our soul.

Wearing polarized sunglasses, with UVA/UVB built-in is imperative for all outdoor activities, especially the beach. Extended exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays causes eye damage: cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Eye lid cancer is a real thing!

Keep in mind that all sunglasses are not created equal. Make sure your shades are polarized and have UV protection built in. Yes, they may cost a little more, but you’re worth it, right? Polarized sunglasses reduce glare from horizontal surfaces such as water, the road and even snow. Having UV protection on your sunglasses means that the lenses they’re equipped with and can guard against the sunlight’s UV rays. Look for sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays for effective eye protection. Our eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV than our skin, but most of us aren’t aware of the risks of UV to our eyes.
